“Affirmative defenses like "not guilty by reason of insanity" and "not guilty by reason of self-defense" stipulate to the commission of the criminal act by definition. You can't say "I did it but you shouldn't punish me because I'm insane" and also "I didn't do it" they're mutually exclusive pleadings.”
